History of the Chamber of Commerce
serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows

The Maple Ridge Board of Trade was constituted under the Benevolent Societies Act in 1910.  It was re-organized and chartered under the Board of Trade Act in August, 1910. The original Board of Trade consisted of some 33 members. The original application listed the following members: thirteen mechanics, five manufacturers, one bank manager, two insurance agents, nine merchants, two traders and one broker. Names of the founding members are found on current municipal roads and streets, including Abernethy, Carr and Charlton.

The Maple Ridge Board of Trade grew and shrank with the fortunes of the region. Two world wars, the great depression of the 30s and the Korean conflict resulted in membership and activities waning.  Following the Second World War, the Maple Ridge Chamber of Commerce was formed to represent the unique business interests of the community.

In November of 1999, Industry Canada granted approval for a change of boundaries for the newly formed Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.  Again, constituted under the Board of Trade Act, this new organization resulted from the merger of the Maple Ridge Chamber of Commerce and the Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce into a larger, more effective voice for business in the region. The newly formed chamber began a mandate of serving the interests of the business community from the Pitt River on the west to the Maple Ridge-Mission border on the east.
